Mold Remediation

Do you have a mold problem? Are you debating whether you should do it yourself of hire a mold remediation company?

You might be curious as to why you should use a professional mold removal when you can save yourself quite a bit of money by just doing it yourself. Should you really spend thousands of dollars on a professional when you can do the job for much less than that? This is not always true. It all depends on the severity of the mold problem.

If you find a pretty small amount of mold in a concentrated area then you can most likely clean it yourself. However, if you are really sensitive to mold then you should not mess with it. A common rule of thumb is smaller than 10 square feet. Anything you larger and you should probably hire a mold removal company.

If the area that is affected is greater than 10 square feet, you should definitely bring in a mold remediation professional. If the mold is hiding in your walls or you are dealing with black mold which is very toxic, then it is a very good idea to hire a professional. You can get extremely sick if you are exposed for long periods of time without the proper protection.

It is really easy to just dial a number from the phone book and hire someone.  You can find yourself the best deal as well as the best contractor or at least the one that is the best in your area. You can contact your friends, family and neighbors and ask them questions, find out their opinions and see who they would recommend to get the job done. The internet is a great place to start your research and find a mold remediation company.

Another consideration is speaking with real estate offices and your city to see who they might recommend to get the job done. Many Realtors can recommend a good company. If you live in a humid client chances are that an experienced Realtor has ran across a mold problem in the past.

Some might find it hard to deal with the price of a professional even if they receive a discount. Depending on the size of the problem the costs can reach into the several thousands. Recently, I heard of a beach front condo in my area need a complete mold remediation. The cost was $6,000. If funds are tight there are some other solutions.

The first and most important thing you should do before hiring and beginning the job is to speak to your home owners insurance company to learn whether your policy covers the cost of mold removal. If your policy does not cover the cost, ask you agent if the reason you have mold (floods for one) is covered in your policy. You might even want to ask if your policy has anything that covers any damage done to the structure due to the mold.

Another solution that you might want to think of is your city. Some cities have several programs for homeowners that will help you to repay the cost of some or all of the clean up of mold. If they do not, they might offer you some help with repairing the damages if they are caused from a flood or an issue with the city such as a water line that has busted. In a case such as this, you have the right to ask the city to help you take care of the damage.

If you happen to be living on a farm, you can get in touch with your state or county to find out if there are any programs that might help you if you have lost income or crops because of mold and having to employ a professional mold removal service.
