Mold is not just an unseemly sight on the walls and floors of a home. It can also cause health problems such as allergic reactions, infections, and so on. Therefore, it is important to put forth the effort to both prevent the growth of mold and clean it up when it does appear. Below are a few tips to keep in mind in order to achieve these goals.
1. Do not take a shower without opening a window or turning on a fan in order to get air circulation going. If this is not done, moisture will build up on the walls and ceiling, causing mold to grow.
2. Clean up any water spills, leaks or stains as soon as possible; around the twenty-four to forty-eight hour mark should be sufficient.
3. If particular rooms and areas in your home are prone to humidity, be sure that a dehumidifier is placed there to prevent the harboring of mold.
4. If you have taken the steps to prevent mold to heart and they still appear, you will need to put on the proper attire in order to clean. A pair of gloves, along with a safety mask and safety glasses, is essential in order to protect you during the process, especially if the case is severe.
5. Using a mixed solution of one gallon of water and one cup bleach, start by wiping down solid places such as the surfaces of metal and glass. Once it has been wiped and there is no sign of the mold, it is still wise that you make sure that each thing you cleaned is completely dry before moving on. Use a fan if one is available to help speed up the process.
6. Keep any windows and doors open as you do your sanitizing. Despite your protective gear, you may still accidentally inhale spores. Inhaling mold spores and especially black mold spores can make you very sick.
7. When dealing with mold on clothing, wash them in hot water, repeatedly inspecting each article for any remaining traces of mold. If it appears that a certain item can’t be saved, toss it out; it will do you little good now.
