You might have a situation where there is a small amount of black mold that needs to be removed. In one sense this a good thing. You caught it early before it spread. Mold spores occur naturally and travel, settle and then grow where conditions are ideal. The best way to stop black mold or any mold for that matter is to prevent it. You can find Stacybotrys Chartarum on almost any surface including furniture, bathroom tiles, drywall, ceilings, ceiling tiles, books, clothes, artwork, shoes, bags, rugs, mattresses, drapes, appliances and so forth.
If you are talking about a small amount you can attempt to take the object outside and brush it off. If possible stick it in a garbage bag before moving it outside. This might prevent the mold spores for moving and settling in other areas of your house. Once outside brush the black mold the object. If it impossible to move the object then lay out a newspaper or a throw away sheet and brush the black mold onto that. You can also attempt to vacuum the black mold as well. Just be sure to throw away the newspaper, sheet or vacuum bag immediately afterwards. You don’t want the mold spores to go somewhere else in the house.
- Feel free to vacuum carpets, rugs, furniture, blinds, drapes, upholstery etc. as well as wipe down with a soapy damp rag. If possible, blast anything you clean with direct sunlight. Any left over mold won’t appreciate that.
- If you have any leather items such as bags, shoes, purses or clothes you can use a mixture of water and alcohol to clean them. Spot test an inconspicuous place first so you don’t ruin your leather. Again, leave them in the direct sunlight for a short time if possible.
- A soapy rag will help clean black mold from desks, book shelves, books, lamps and other furniture. If it is too bad you may have to use a brush. Make sure you dry these items.
- Stick clothes in a bag and then throw them in the washer with hot water and detergent. If possible, let them dry in the sun. If not just make sure they are really dry before you put them back in the closet.
- Scrub bathroom tile with a strong brush. Use vinegar and baking soda paste to scrub off. Also, you can spray with water and bleach to prevent black mold from growing.
These are things you can do for a small amount of black mold that you don’t think will spread through handling. If you do decide to do it yourself make sure you wear eye protection and masks for breathing. If the problem is too large you may have to take more extreme measures and call a mold remediation company. Remember the best way is to prevent it from starting. Here are some tips to preventing black mold. If you are not sure you have it here are some methods for detecting black mold.
